For example, misleading advertising is a big no-no, and there are strict consumer laws in Australia to keep things fair. That’s straight from the syllabus, pages 21 and 22, if you want to check.Yeah, and the marketing process itself is pretty structured. You start with a situational analysis—think SWOT and product life cycle—then you do your market research, set objectives, identify your target market, and finally, you get into the marketing mix: product, price, promotion, and place. Oh, and don’t forget about pricing strategies like skimming or penetration, and all those clever promotional tactics.Let’s bring in some real-world flavour. Qantas, for example, has nailed its frequent flyer program and online branding. They’ve used digital channels to keep customers loyal and engaged. Meanwhile, CBA—Commonwealth Bank of Australia—has done wonders with customer segmentation and digital marketing, targeting different groups with tailored products and services.I love that. And, actually, I’ve got a quick story—there was this social media campaign for a new eco-friendly product, and honestly, I wasn’t even looking for it, but the way they used influencers and targeted ads, I ended up buying it. Shows how powerful a well-executed marketing strategy can be, right?Absolutely. It’s all about understanding your audience and using the right mix of strategies. Shall we move on to Finance?Finance is the backbone of any business. The strategic role of financial management is to ensure the business has enough resources to achieve its goals—profitability, liquidity, efficiency, growth, and solvency. And, of course, finance is deeply interdependent with marketing, operations, and HR. You can’t run a great campaign if you can’t fund it, right?Exactly! And when it comes to sources of finance, businesses can use internal sources like retained profits, or external ones like loans, overdrafts, or even issuing shares. Budgeting is key—if you don’t plan where your money’s going, you’re in trouble. Then you’ve got to monitor and control everything, using tools like cash flow statements and financial ratios.Speaking of ratios, I always tell my students—don’t just memorise them, understand what they mean. Liquidity, for example, is about whether you can pay your bills on time. Profitability is, well, are you actually making money? I remember teaching a group who just couldn’t get their heads around the debt to equity ratio. We spent a whole afternoon breaking it down with real examples, and suddenly it clicked. Sometimes you just need to see it in action.That’s so true. And if we look at CBA, they’re a great example of using capital investment and risk management to stay ahead. They invest in tech and manage risks carefully, which keeps them competitive. Qantas, on the other hand, has had to be really sharp with cost control and cash flow, especially during tough times like the pandemic. They had to make some hard decisions to keep the business afloat.It all comes back to having the right strategies and constantly analysing your performance. If you’re not measuring, you’re guessing. And in business, guessing is risky business. Now, let’s talk about the people side—Human Resources.Human Resources is all about managing people to help the business succeed. It’s not just hiring and firing—it’s recruitment, training, development, and making sure everyone’s working towards the same goals. And, like everything else, HR is totally interdependent with the other business functions. If your staff aren’t happy, your operations and customer service will suffer.Absolutely. HR is influenced by so many factors—stakeholders like employees and unions, the legal framework, technology, ethics, and workplace diversity. Businesses have to keep up with changing laws, use tech to streamline processes, and make sure they’re being ethical and inclusive. Strategies like recruitment, training, and even global outsourcing are all part of the mix.Let’s look at Qantas again. They’ve had some big challenges with staff, especially during union disputes and COVID-19. Managing those relationships and keeping staff motivated was crucial. CBA, meanwhile, has put a lot into leadership development and building a positive workplace culture. It’s not just about ticking boxes—it’s about making people feel valued.And recruitment is a big one. I always say, a business is only as good as its people.
